CPR course in Orange

What the childcare first aid course covers

Educators practising a first aid scenario on each other at a childcare centre during an on-site childcare first aid course run by Orange First Aid, with CPR manikins laid out on mats behind them

One nationally recognised unit: HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting. It covers everything in the standard first aid course (HLTAID011), including HLTAID009 Provide CPR, plus the extra ground an education and care service needs - asthma, anaphylaxis, and first aid for children and infants. It's the course on ACECQA's approved list for first aid, anaphylaxis management and emergency asthma management.

CPR and the defib - adults, children and infants

How to check someone who's collapsed, call Triple Zero (000), start CPR and use a defibrillator (AED). You'll practise on adult, child and infant manikins until it feels automatic.

Asthma, anaphylaxis and the emergencies you'll see with kids

Recognising an asthma attack and a severe allergic reaction and following the child's action plan, including the reliever puffer with a spacer and the adrenaline autoinjector (trainer devices on the day). Then choking, bleeding, burns, fractures, sprains, bites and stings, head bumps and febrile convulsions.

Taking charge until the ambos arrive

Working through DRSABCD, keeping the other children safe and calm, what to say to Triple Zero (000), handing over to the ambos, letting the family know, and the incident report your service needs afterwards.

It's practical from the minute you walk in. Our trainers have spent years in sport and health and run first aid for childcare centres, preschools and schools across the Central West, so the scenarios are the ones you'll actually face in a room full of kids. Everything follows current Australian Resuscitation Council (ANZCOR) guidelines.

Who does the childcare first aid course in Orange?

Most people in the room are there for one of these reasons:

  • Educators and staff at childcare centres and long day care - new starters, and the team keeping their 3-year renewal up to date
  • Family day care educators, who usually need the full set of first aid, anaphylaxis and asthma units in their own home
  • Preschool, OSHC and vacation care staff
  • Teachers, school support staff and anyone else whose service asks for the education and care first aid unit
  • Students doing a childcare or teaching course who need HLTAID012 before placement

Not sure which units your role needs? Check with your service or regulator - then book the one they name. Not in education and care at all? You most likely need the first aid course in Orange (HLTAID011, $180) instead.

Before you book

No prerequisite

You don't need any previous training. First-timers and people renewing do the same course together, and plenty of educators in each group have never done first aid before.

You need to be physically up to it

This is a hands-on course. You'll be kneeling on the floor doing 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on a manikin, and practising on adult, child and infant manikins. If a knee, back or anything else makes that hard, give Scott a call on 0488 749 013 before you book and we'll talk it through.

Do the online theory first

When you book you'll get a login for the online theory. Work through it at your own pace on a phone, tablet or computer, and finish it before you come in - the face-to-face session is all practical, so there's no catching up on the day.

What to wear and bring

Comfortable clothes you can kneel and move in, and closed shoes. Bring photo ID (driver's licence, passport or student card). You'll also need a Unique Student Identifier (USI) - it's free, takes a few minutes online, and we can't issue your certificate without it. See our booking FAQs for how to get one.

How the childcare first aid course runs

  1. Book online. Pick a date from the list above, pay, and you're locked in. You'll get an email with your login for the online theory.
  2. Do the theory at home. Work through it at your own pace before course day. Finish it before you come in.
  3. 2 hours face to face in Orange. Hands-on practice with our trainers at the Orange Arcade training centre - CPR and the defib, the asthma and anaphylaxis scenarios, then the rest of the first aid you'd use with kids.
  4. Get assessed. Practical tasks on the day, including CPR on adult, child and infant manikins and a run of first aid scenarios with asthma and anaphylaxis in them, plus a short multiple-choice theory test and a first aid incident report.
  5. Certificate sorted. Your Statement of Attainment for HLTAID012 is issued by Allens Training once you've completed everything. Give a copy to your service, and put the CPR refresh in your diary - it's due every 12 months.

Childcare first aid course in Orange - your questions

Which first aid course do I need for childcare?

For a childcare centre, family day care, preschool, OSHC or school, it's usually HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting - this course, $200. It's on ACECQA's approved list for first aid, anaphylaxis and asthma. Your service or regulator will tell you exactly which units your role needs, so check with them first, then book the one they name. If they just say "a first aid certificate", HLTAID012 covers you.

What's the difference between HLTAID011 and HLTAID012?

HLTAID011 Provide First Aid is the standard first aid course most workplaces ask for ($180). HLTAID012 covers everything in HLTAID011 plus the education and care side: asthma and anaphylaxis emergencies and following a child's action plan, CPR and first aid for children and infants, and the reporting a service needs. Both are valid 3 years and both include CPR. If you work in education and care, book HLTAID012. If you don't, book the first aid course in Orange (HLTAID011).

How long is the childcare first aid certificate valid for? When do I renew CPR?

Your HLTAID012 certificate is valid for 3 years. The CPR part should be refreshed every 12 months - that's the 45-minute CPR course in Orange, $75. So most educators do the CPR refresh twice in between, then the full HLTAID012 course again when the 3 years is up. CPR is included in this course, so don't book CPR on top of it.

How long does the childcare first aid course take?

Online theory at your own pace at home, then 2 hours face to face at our training centre in the Orange Arcade. The face-to-face session is all hands-on - CPR, the defib, the asthma and anaphylaxis scenarios and the rest of the first aid practice - so finish the theory before you come in.

Does the course cover anaphylaxis and asthma?

Yes. HLTAID012 includes recognising and responding to an asthma emergency and a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis), following the child's action plan, and practising with a reliever puffer and spacer and an adrenaline autoinjector trainer. It's the course on ACECQA's approved list for first aid, anaphylaxis management and emergency asthma management - one certificate instead of three separate courses. Check with your service if your role needs anything on top.

Can I do the childcare first aid course online?

The theory, yes - you do it online at home before course day. The practical can't be done online: CPR on the manikins and the asthma and anaphylaxis scenarios have to be assessed in person, and that's the 2 hours with us in Orange. A certificate from a 100% online course isn't nationally recognised for HLTAID012.
